Amon Tobin’s Esther’s

Last week Mr Phoenix commented that the Goodbye video was “intensely stalkerish”. This video, accompanying music by Amon Tobin, is even moreso, like someone watched Hardware and thought it was dead romantic.

Sendak’s original Bumble-Ardy

Maurice Sendak has a new book out, Bumble-Ardy, about a pig whose 9th birthday party goes awry. But the concept first appeared on Sesame Street in 1971 as an animation about the number nine.

The book came out in September and has a quite wonderfully negative review on Amazon:

We had high expectations from the man that wrote Where The Wild Things are and In the Night Kitchen. My heart sank while reading this out loud and looked at the grotesque illustrations. When I finished both my 11 and 7 year old said in unison: I don’t get it. And frankly nor do I.

Sounds perfect!

Animated Bookshop

Back in 2004 there was an art thing where Chris Cobb sorted all the books in a bookshop by colour (NPR interview). I was reminded of that when watching this video which takes that insanity to the next level and animates it. Lovely stuff.

It got me thinking about why books, specifically when placed on shelves in groups, are fascinating. I think it’s because when the order of them is logical according to the contents, the patterns they make physically are so random. There is order and chaos on a bookshelf. When you sort them by their colour or shape you reverse that.

Terry Gilliam’s Animation Masterclass

What I find interesting about this 15 minute tutorial in cutout animation, beyond seeing a young Gilliam being sensible and coherent, is the connection between his approach to and style of animation and the Flash work that came out of B3ta in the early 2000s from the likes of Joel Veitch and Jonti. This, for example, is not a million miles from Gilliam.

Whale Fall

I’ve been fascinated by Whale Falls for a while now. In short, when a Whale dies in deep water the carcass arrives at the sea bed and can support what little life survives down there for decades. It’s like an injection of extreme awesomeness into a barren wasteland. So this animation appealed to me no end.

So What as animated sheet music

I see a lot of attempts to visualise music but this is probably the best, for what in retrospect seem obvious reasons. Hypnotic.
