Aether Cola

A clear cola in a steampunk themed can designed by John Coulthart on sale in branches of Cybercandy, of which there is one in Birmingham? Why yes, that’ll do nicely.

Noguchi Coffee Table? No Thanks

Fuck Your Noguchi Coffee Table is a delightful Tumblr in the spirit, if not the style, of Unhappy Hipsters. It’s like a quiet rant, possibly a list-song. The above made me spit.

Malika Favre’s Kama Sutra

This is zipping around my Internets today, understandably as it combines those two key things, sex and great graphic design, to create a people alphabet, something you don’t see enough of these days. Penguin US are doing a new version of the Kama Sutra and, realising that their defacto monopoly on public domain texts has completely evaporated these days, have commissioned a gorgeous cover by Malika Favre, a French illustrator living in London.

Many more closeups and photos of the books on Core77, Creative Review and, of course, Favre’s own site.

Of course these things don’t spring out of a vacuum. Favre has loads of work online including this saphic alphabet which probably got her the commission.

You can buy her prints online.

British Rail design

A set of scans of a 1986 Danish book on British Rail design and visual identity.

There’s something about British nationalised industries and their visual design that evokes order and confidence, or maybe that’s with the benefit of hindsight from our age of chaotic and frequently awful branding. Socialism has the best eye.

Whipped Cream Parodies

John Coulthart informs us of a lovely phenomena in the recorded music industry – the album cover parody cover. A visual version of the cover version, if you like.

Some covers inspire more parodies than others. One of my favourites is the perennial inspiration provided by Whipped Cream & Other Delights, Herb Alpert’s hugely popular 1965 album whose cover by Peter Whorf Graphics may now be more well-known than the music it packaged.

There are more in John’s post and even more on this page.

John was promoted to post this on hearing of a new book, Covered, which looks at the phenomena in much more detail. Here’s Covered’s cover featuring cover covers.

Occupy Posters

What fascinates me about this collection is the randomness of the influences. It’s a mess of signals and I think that’s in a small way significant.

Faber book covers

This is a lovely thing. Faber and Faber have gotten a Flickr account and shared 319 book covers through it. So many wonders.

I particularly like how they appear to be ordered by colour.

Das Patent

The Patent is a three dimensional shape that can be angled to resemble each letter of the alphabet, rendered as a fluorescent light in the image above.

It’s designed by Adam Slowik at Bank Associates who are great at designing cool things, but not so great at designing useful websites as it’s impossible to link directly to this item. Search for “patent” on the page.

Found on a compendium of these sorts of things which came via Clusterflock

Rorschach Watch

Inspired no doubt by the shifting mask of the Watchmen character, this e-ink inkblot watch, designed by Samuel Jerichow, morphs into Rorshach-esque patterns which require a bit of work to decipher. There’s an animation on the site of it in action and clues on how to read it. This says 07h 46m 57s:

Watches are bit passe these days but I’d like to see a wall-mounted version. Or even just a screensaver.
